Different Styles of Cabinets
A professional cabinet refacing company or your local home improvement store can help you figure out what kind of style you want your kitchen cabinets to have. Decide whether you want wood, fiberboard or metal kitchen cabinet doors. Wood doors can be made of cherry, maple, birch, hickory or pine. When refacing cabinets, you can choose to finish them with plastic laminate, rigid thermofoils, or RTF (which is applied to particleboard), and wood. Many people choose wood for replacing cabinet doors, but the cost of them could be as much as 25% higher than using laminate. Plastic laminates come in more colors than RTF veneers, which are less expensive and not as durable.
Replacing cabinet doors can change the character of your kitchen. Cabinet doors with arches can give your kitchen a more classic feel. Eyebrow arches can make a contemporary kitchen look more traditional, while cathedral arches give a more country casual feel. Cabinet doors with raised panels are more traditional, and can be highlighted with glazes for a more traditional style. Flat panel doors look more contemporary and can fit into a variety of decors.
Try to choose colors that are consistent with the design of your kitchen cabinets. Even if you're only planning to refinish them, the color you choose to stain or paint kitchen cabinets can change the tone of your room.
Replacing and refinishing kitchen cabinets is a big commitment. If you don't know how to begin choosing cabinet doors and hardware, enlist the help of a kitchen refacing professional to learn more about your options.
